Six years ago I was visiting a friend in Hita in western Oita prefecture. We had a discussion about the changes of the Japanese by the youth and the phrase 「ってゆーか」came up. I could not understand what it meant at first but after an explanation it became clear. There are two common uses of「ってゆーか」:
1. Aってゆーか・・・
「もう春だね。温かくなってきたってゆーか・・・
is like:「温かくなってきたみたい」「温かくなってきた感じ」. In these examples the ending offers vagueness. The first example can be translated as: “It seems to be getting warmer” and the second example, “It feels like it is getting warmer”
2. AってゆーかB
i.「あなたのビジョン？ってゆーか将来像は？」
ii.「パスが下手ってゆーか、息が合っていない」
The first example can be translated as, “What’s your vision? Or what’s your future image?” The second maybe translated as, “It was either a poor pass or the timing was off”. In Japanese the meaning becomes,「A言い換えればB」「AむしろB」. In English these have the meaning of changing what was said in A or reinstating what was said previously as the B clause.
It can be agreed that 「といいますか」or「というより」maybe used instead of「ってゆーか」. However, there is another meaning that Japanese youth are now using. For example, A:「あの子、彼氏と映画に行くらしいよ。うらやましいね」
B:「ってゆーか、ずるくない？
In this example, the meaning of 「ってゆーか」implies a sort of a counterargument or a suggestion of unfairness or jealous on the part of speaker B!
A: “It looks as though that chick (girl) with her boyfriend. I’m envious.”
B: “Sort of unfair, isn’t it?”
I’m honestly unsure of how this one would be translated as there isn’t really a direct word. As long as there is a hint of counterargument or perhaps jealously it would be sufficient.
I am not sure where this is leading but it is always interesting and note worthy to know. Some may suggest that this is only a fad or style that will likely disappear shortly yet others seem to suggest that the expression is here to stay with the Japanese language. I wonder how long would it take for such expressions to make their way into the official 日本語能力試験 (Japanese Language Proficiency Exam). Not for quite some time as far as I know.
