The difference between はand がin Japanese language can be very confusing but need not be confusing at all. The following examples maybe of help. If anyone has any other ideas please contribute in the comments.
In both these examples りんごis the subject. The difference here is where the stress is placed:
リンゴはおいしい。 おいしいis important
りんごがおいしい。 りんごis important
(私は)猫がえさを食べている(のを見た)。 猫 is important
猫はえさを食べている。食べる is important
がindicates the subject as in the example, 花が咲く(花is important)。花は咲くbecause the flower is not animate.
Things we see happen:
*犬がほえる。 犬はほえる
*鳥がなく。 とりはなく
*more common
The difference here as above depends on where the stress is placed. Take a look at the following examples as well:
1. 地球が太陽を回る description, seeing
2. 地球は太陽を回る truth, fact
3. 大西洋が太平洋より小さい discription
4. 大西洋は太平洋より小さい truth
5. 天気がいい drive に行こう description
6. 天気はいい fact, truth
