Minority languages

I was talking to a couple one day whom were English teachers at some private school in Guangzhou heading on bicycles through Vietnam to Thailand. Somehow the question about languages came up and the comment, “there is no need for some many languages” came up. I couldn’t say anything at that time I was just too shocked to hear it but at the same time there is a lot of those kinds of people in the world. I would like to have said: “what language would you like us all to speak?” but I didn’t have the courage to say it. How can people be so arrogant towards minority languages and culture? I like to say DON’T COME TO CHINA AND TEACH ENGLISH. Come teach Japanese, French, Vietnamese any language is ok we cannot encourage peace if we all speak the language of business. Speak your native language DON’T be afraid.

I understand the sentiment very well and there is certainly a need to strengthen the rights of minority languages, but you know as well as I do that Mandarin and Spanish are also languages of business as well. I can only assume that for the sake of the consistency of your argument, you'd have to argue against teaching Mandarin and Spanish as well. Anyways, if I heard a comment like the one you heard, I would reply, “fucking learn Mandarin; it's the least you can do. After that, we'll get you started on the harder, vernacular ones that are actually WORTH learning.”

It is assumed that calm is good for everything, and is assumed the game of skill and the urgent business to have to avoid it. It is said, [It is bad in the morning, and it is good in the afternoon].
